First-Time Expedition Cruisers

What do I get for my money?
Your expedition cruise price includes your cabin, all meals and non-alcoholic beverages onboard, shore excursions and, of course, all transportation between all the ports on your itinerary. Some expedition cruise companies may also include beer and wine with dinner, and a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay.

Will I feel bored or confined on board?
Never! The scenery is constantly changing, and every port is filled with new and exciting opportunities for exploration.

What can I do on a ship?
That depends on the ship, but generally the larger expedition vessels will have the most activities. You may wish to enjoy a cup of coffee and the ever-changing scenery in the observation lounge, head over to the fitness center for a quick workout or get pampered in the salon. If your expedition vessel has an "open bridge," you can visit with the captain and check out the navigation equipment. Expedition cruises are known for their enriching seminars and lectures, which are scheduled daily and designed to provide in-depth details on your destination's history and culture.

Is airfare included in my cruise price?
Expedition cruise companies usually offer a cruise-only price, a price that includes a domestic air component and a price with domestic and connecting international airfare, transfers between the airport and ship and baggage handling. In some instances, only the cruise-only fare is available. The prices shown on our site are typically cruise-only, but our expedition cruise specialists will gladly provide an air-inclusive price if requested.

What's a shore excursion?
That's a term that refers to organized activities off the ship, in port, that are typically organized by the expedition cruise company.

Are all expedition ships the same?
Absolutely not. They range from vessels with less than 90 passengers to larger ships with a maximum capacity of more than 300 people.

Will I need a passport?
All cruises now require proof of citizenship. A passport is required on all expedition cruises. Visas may also be required for some countries. Your expedition cruise specialist will advise you on documents you will need, depending on your itinerary. For more information, click here.

Is an expedition cruise suitable for families with kids?
It depends. Your cruise counselor can advise you of the expedition ships and cruises that are not kid-friendly.

Are cruises suitable for single travelers?
Cruising is very popular with single travelers. Some expedition ships offer single cabins, and most offer a single supplement rate for double staterooms.

Are cruises really that popular?
You better believe it! More than 10 million people will cruise in the next year, and cruising routinely earns the highest ratings in customer satisfaction among all vacation categories. Once you try it, you'll be hooked.

What is a Day at Sea?
A Day at Sea is a full day spent sailing between two ports. Most cruises include one or more Days at Sea.
