Established in 1701, Detroit is the oldest city in the Midwest and the birthplace of the motorcar and the automotive assembly line. Today it is renowned for being one of the top automotive centers in the world and is home to some of the nation's top brands such as Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge. Detroit was also the birthplace of Motown, and visitors can see the original control room and recording studio where stars like the Jackson Five, Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder made hit records at the Motown Historical Museum. Visitors can also explore the city's unique riverfront downtown, which is home to several shops and restaurants, a new sports stadium, a historic theatre district, and the Renaissance Center, a group of seven interconnected skyscrapers that provide the best views of downtown Detroit.
