Despite having a population of only about 3,000, the town of Maloy on the island of Vagsoy is the most important fishing port in Norway, responsible for exporting seafood products all over the world. Sample the local bounty at your choice of several seafood restaurants, where offerings range from unfussy fish soup to trendy fusion dishes. A notable spot in town is The Maloy Raid Center, an interactive museum commemorating Operation Archery, a 1941 raid on Vagsoy during which Norwegian and British commandos destroyed four factories being used by German forces to produce fish oil as a component of explosives. A short drive away is a sight sure to delight photographers: Kannesteinen, a natural coastal rock formation that, through thousands of years of water erosion, has adopted a distinctive, mushroom-like shape.
