Sepik River (Watam Village), Papua New Guinea

The Sepik River is quite possibly the largest unpolluted freshwater system in the Asia Pacific region, with no major urban or industrial development anywhere in the river basin. The surrounding forests and wetlands are home to many species of birds and plants, as well as the crocodiles that so significantly influence local tribal culture. The inhabitants of the area, such as the village of Watam near the mouth of the Sepik, make their living off the land and proudly preserve their unique Melanesian culture and language.
