Stokmarknes is a small fishing village on the islands of Hadseloya and Boroya and serves as the administrative center for Hadsel Municipality. It is notably where Richard With began Hurtigruten Cruises in 1893 by sailing his steamer, DS Vesteraalen, between Stokmarknes and other Norwegian ports. While the cruise line is now headquartered in Tromso, Norway, Stokmarknes honors the line's history with the Hurtigruten Museum. The maritime museum exhibits authentic rooms, photographs, paintings and model ships, and the historic MS Finnmarken, built in 1956, is docked on land and open for exploration. It is one of the largest museum pieces in the world. Stokmarknes is also home to a contemporary art gallery and various outfitters offering boating and fishing excursions.
