Both Pliny and Homer found Zakynthos appealing, and there are understandable reasons why the island has been one of the more recent choices for international development. Its beaches are broad and sandy. An abundance of natural springs once earned the island the sobriquet "The Flower of the Levant" from the Venetians, and even now the twisting lanes and banks of wildflowers keep the land fragrant and fresh. For many years perfume has been made and sold locally from these flowers. Local wines, full-bodied whites or roses, are very popular.
